BELTON, Texas –
Timothy Barney broke a 0-0 tie in the 61st minute with the only goal scored in a defensive battle, lifting the Concordia Texas men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory on Friday and securing a trip to the ASC Championship match.
Barney's second goal of the season turned out to be a postseason game-winner, securing CTX's third straight ASC Championship match appearance. It is the first time a team has earned three straight championship berths since UT Dallas completed the feat from 2014-16.
The Tornados pressed the attack early on in the match, as
Marco Vazquez fired three shots, all of them on-goal, in the first 22 minutes, applying pressure to the UTD defense.
Theo Givens and
Melvin Molina each recorded a shot in the first half as well, but the Tornados were unable to come away with a goal. At halftime, the score was even at 0-0.
After a pair of shots on-goal from Molina and
Victor Gomez in the 60th and 61st minutes, Barney notched the game-winner shortly after, putting the Tornados ahead 1-0 in the 62nd minute.
The CTX defense smothered the Comets in the second half, allowing only four shots, and were able to take the 1-0 advantage the distance as Concordia Texas came out on top 1-0 in the ASC semifinals.
Vazquez totaled four shots on the night, all of them on-goal, and Molina fired two shots on-goal.
For the third straight year, the Tornados will appear in the ASC Championship match, squaring off with Hardin-Simmons at 1 p.m. on Sunday for a shot at the program's first ASC title.
