GEORGETOWN, Texas –
Natalie Velardez posted 11 points and 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double and the Concordia Texas women's basketball team defeated Southwestern for the second game in a row in a wire-to-wire victory 55-46 on Tuesday.
The Tornados, coming off a season-opening win over the Pirates last Friday inside Concordia Fieldhouse, traveled to Robertson Gymnasium to face the cross-town foes once again.
Velardez, who recorded her second career double-double in the season opener, was dominating on the boards once again, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Offensively, Velardez went 3-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line, reaching double figures with 11 points.
Falyn Taylor, meanwhile, knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe for a team-high 12 points and added seven rebounds.
The Tornados were stringent on defense in the opening quarter, not allowing the first SU points of the game till the 6:02 mark. Concordia Texas held the Pirates to 27% shooting from the field in the quarter and led 13-8 after one.
In the second period, the Tornados extended their lead to double-digits after
Madi Maxwell's two free throws made it 26-16. Maxwell, who had a team-high 14 points in the teams' previous matchup, finished the game with eight points
Southwestern countered with a 7-0 spurt to end the half and CTX headed to the locker room with 26-23 advantage.
In the third quarter, Velardez scored six of her 11 points in the period, but the Pirates shot over 50% from the floor, cutting the Tornados' lead to one after three at 38-37.
Concordia Texas responded with a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter, ignited by the play of
Chelsea Cogborn off the bench. The Houston native scored the Tornados' first eight points of the period and began to widen the gap once again.
Havyn Perez capped off the run with a jumper and CTX had their largest lead of the night at 48-37.
The Pirates rallied late though, reeling off eight straight points to pull within three with 2:05 left to play.
Maxwell hit three of her five made free throws down the stretch and the Tornados held off SU for a 55-46 victory to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
Concordia Texas will next return home to host Texas Lutheran on Friday at 6 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
