ABILENE, Texas –
Havyn Perez exploded for a career-high 24 points, doubling her previous high mark, and lifted the Concordia Texas women's basketball team to its first ASC win of the season as they took down McMurry 71-53 on Saturday.
Perez scored 14 of her 24 points in the fourth, icing the game as the Tornados pulled away in the final period. She shot an efficient 7-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep, and added seven rebounds and three assists to her stat line.
The Tornados played to a slim advantage in the first half, relying on stout defense as they held McMurry below 40% shooting in the first two quarters, and would eventually pull away with a 28-point output in the fourth quarter.
In the first half, the Tornados held the lead from the opening tip as
Mikayla Johnson, who had a career-high 14 points on Thursday, knocked down a 3-pointer for the first basket of the game.
Eight different players scored for CTX throughout the first half, including a key contribution by
Zakari Perry off the bench.
The Victoria, Texas native went 3-of-5 from the field and had seven points in the half, including a driving layup to end the first quarter as the Tornados led 15-9 after one.
In the second quarter, CTX took their largest lead of the first half at 24-16 after Perez's pull-up jumper with 3:57 to go. She finished with five points between the opening two quarters.
The War Hawks battled back though, closing out the quarter on an 11-4 run and the Tornados went into the locker room with the slight edge at 30-29.
McMurry opened the second half with a jumper, gaining their first lead of the contest, but Perez answered with a three-pointer to regain the CTX lead 33-31 with 9:20 to go in the period.
The Tornados played out to a 41-36 lead thanks to a long-range basket from Johnson at the 5:39 mark, but the War Hawks closed the quarter with a 7-3 run, evening the score a 43-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Perez took over in the fourth quarter, beginning with back-to-back three pointers to give CTX a 51-43 lead with 7:43 left to play.
The junior point guard continued to do damage, hitting another jumper and assisting Perry on a fast break bucket to extend the CTX lead to 57-43 at the 4:23 mark.
The Tornados shot 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the final two minutes, closing out the game and securing a 71-53 victory on the road.
Ending their road trip with a win, the Tornados will look to stay hot as they return home for an ASC bout with UT Dallas on Saturday, hosting the Comets in Concordia Fieldhouse for a 1 p.m. tip off.
