Gonzalez's all-around performance thwarts the Comets' comeback

AUSTIN, Texas – Luis Gonzalez had a near triple-double performance, scoring a team-high 20 points along with nine steals and nine assists as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team returned to the win column with a 95-92 victory over UT Dallas on Saturday.

The Tornados, who returned to Concordia Fieldhouse after an overtime defeat last week on the road against McMurry, found their shooting form once again as six different players scored in double figures led by the play of Gonzalez.

The Carolina, Puerto Rico native scored 20-plus points for the fourth time in his last five games and dished out a career-high nine assists along with nine steals. Antoine Henderson, meanwhile, produced 17 points and snagged eight rebounds in the win.

In the first half, CTX jumped out to the early lead with an 11-4 run, capped off by Alexander Estrada's basket plus the free throw. He finished with 10 points on the afternoon, the third time he has scored 10-plus points this season.

The Comets responded, closing the deficit to two after a layup at the 13:20 mark.

The Tornados would pull away once again though, this time with a 16-2 surge aided by Caleb Elsey's five points. He finished with a season-high 10 points off the bench.

Concordia Texas had 23 of its 45 first-half points come from its bench, including seven points by Trevon Hester, and headed into the locker room with a 45-41 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, UTD opened on a 15-6 run to take their first lead of the afternoon at 56-51 with 15:50 to play.

The Tornados would catch fire from beyond the arc though, hitting three straight 3-pointers, including back-to-back from Estrada, to pull back in front at 63-60.

Concordia Texas shot over 60% from the floor in the half, which included a 5-of-8 performance from Gonzalez to maintain their lead over the Comets.

UT Dallas mounted one last comeback in the final seconds of the game, closing the gap to 93-91 with six seconds to go.

Gonzalez and Donovan Stafford each knocked down one of two free throws to put the game away though, as the Tornados secured a 95-92 win.

Stafford finished the game with 10 points, his second straight double-digit outing, while Hester fiinished the afternoon with 12 points and four assists.

Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround, returning to the court on Sunday for a conference showdown against LeTourneau at 3 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
