KERVILLE, Texas –
Landrei Stafford picked up three hits, including a homerun, and three RBI's as the Concordia Texas softball team split a doubleheader against Schreiner on Thursday.
The Tornados put together an all-around impressive offensive performance in the first game, recording 14 hits while also applying pressure in the running game by swiping five bags.
The Tornados' offense came out hot, scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning.
Ashley Hallmark and
Erica Riley executed a double steal, putting them both in scoring position, and RBI's from Stafford and
Ellie Congalton gave CTX a 2-0 lead after the first frame.
After a scoreless second inning, Concordia Texas exploded for five runs on four hits in the third. Stafford got things started with a two-run homer, and an RBI single from
Emily Schmuck put the Tornados ahead 7-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, an RBI triple from Schmuck tacked on another run and extended the Tornados lead to 8-0.
The Mountaineers roared back in the bottom of the fifth, pushing five runs across before
Bailey Tisdale forced a fly out to end the threat.
Schreiner scratched two more runs across on three hits in the next inning, cutting the CTX lead to 8-7 going into the final frame.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Schreiner brought a run across on an RBI single, tying the game at 8-8, but
Delaney Loosemore entered the game to pitch and kept things square by getting two quick outs, sending the contest into extra innings.
The Tornados scored five runs on four hits in the extra frame, led by a two-RBI single off the bat of
Megan Hooper. Concordia Texas took a five-run advantage into the bottom of the eighth inning, leading 13-8.
Schreiner managed to scratch one run across, but Loosemore ultimately shut the door and CTX won the first game 13-9.
The Tornados fell behind quick in the second game, giving up five runs on six hits in the first inning, and found themselves trailing 5-0 after one.
After being shutout in the first three frames, CTX found their footing offensively in the fourth. Congalton picked up an RBI groundout and Hooper was able to drive in a run with a base knock, making it a three-run game as the Tornados trailed 5-2.
In the fifth inning,
Cristina Ayala drew a walk and stole second, putting herself in the position to score on a double from
Erica Riley. The Tornados trailed 5-3 after five.
Despite climbing back into the game, the Tornados' comeback was shot down by another big inning from Schreiner, as they scored five runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 10-3.
The Tornados did not go away, a double from Stafford pushing across two runs in the final frame, but ultimately the Tornados fell 10-5 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Concordia Texas will continue their road trip, traveling to Marshall, Texas on Friday to open conference play with a three game series against East Texas Baptist.
