BELTON, Texas –
Madi Maxwell scored in double figures for the sixth time this season, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball team fell short to Mary Hardin-Baylor 74-42 on Thursday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
The Tornados took the court for their first game since Feb. 6 after having their last four games called off due to inclement weather in the state and struggled to find their shooting touch throughout the night.
In the opening quarter, CTX only made three shots from the field, including a pair of jumpers from Maxwell, but were unable to keep the Cru out of the paint and trailed 16-7 after one.
In the following period, the Tornados began to find a rhythm, using a 13-6 run to pull within four after a
Havyn Perez 3-pointer with 3:08 left in the quarter. Perez finished the game with five points as well as a team-high seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Concordia Texas remained within striking distance at the midway point, thanks to Maxwell's 10 first-half points, and trailed 29-20 as the teams headed to the locker room.
In the third quarter, UMHB took their biggest lead of the game after fast break layup with 2:36 to go in the period. The Tornados remained resilient though, closing out the quarter on an 11-1 spurt, including a
Kennedy Donovan layup at the buzzer, and trailed 52-37 heading into the fourth.
In the final period, CTX went cold and were unable to complete the comeback as the Cru pulled away for a 74-42 victory.
Maxwell finished with a team-high 10 points, while
Natalie Velardez, playing in her first game since Jan. 9, poured in nine points and three rebounds in the loss.
The Tornados will have a quick turnaround and chance at revenge when they will host UMHB on Saturday at 1 p.m.
