ALPINE –
Bobby Espericueta hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with a minute to play and
Luis Gonzalez's free throws sealed the deal as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team ended the game on a 14-1 run and pulled off a 69-63 come-from-behind win over Sul Ross State on Saturday.
The Tornados had led for most of the game, including a first-half nine-point advantage, but trailed late in the second half 62-55 with 3:21 to play after Julian Paredes knocked down a couple of free throws.
Concordia Texas responded quickly as
Trevon Hester hit his third bucket of the night,
Alexander Estrada made two free throws and Gonzalez went 1-for-2 at the line to cut the deficit to two with just over two minutes to go.
After a Lobos free throw followed by a quick
Antoine Henderson layup made it a one-point game at 63-62, it was the Tornados' defense that came up clutch as
Zaid Harris picked off Julian Paredes and found Espericueta, who was playing in only his fourth game of the season, for the go-ahead 3-pointer with over a minute to go.
Gonzalez clinched the win knocking down four free-throws in the final seconds of the game and capping off a 14-1 spurt as CTX knocked off SRSU 69-63 for their second win in a row.
Gonzalez finished the day with 15 points, including a 11-of-14 performance at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Henderson nearly had his first double-double of the season, producing 15 points along with nine boards.
Off the bench,
Spencer Bone hit four 3-pointers for 12 points and added five rebounds as well.
The Tornados will next return home for a two-game homestand, beginning on Thursday when they will host East Texas Baptist at 7:30 p.m. in a rematch of their 2020 conference tournament quarterfinal.
