AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches, but were unable to knock off Texas Wesleyan in their season opener on Saturday, falling 5-4 at River Place Country Club.
The Tornados started strong in their 2021 season opener, winning at lines one and three to grab an early 2-1 lead.
At line one,
Joshua Bode and
Esteban Arredondo dominated, defeating the Rams' Andres Gonzalez and Lucas Diaz Freire 8-1. Meanwhile,
Nico De La Pena and
Michael Davis squeaked out an 8-6 win at line three over Linus Richter and Thibault Gasser.
In singles play, Bode wrapped up a perfect individual day, winning handily at line one 6-2, 6-1. Van der Heijden, in his second season with CTX, was engaged in a back and forth match at line two, but had to retire in the third set against TWU's Mathieu Vinet.
Arredondo secured the only other singles win of the day for CTX, defeating Pablo Olmedo in a three-set thriller, grabbing the decisive set with a 7-5 score.
Joeri Bregman, in his collegiate debut, nearly pulled off the win at line four, but fell short, losing 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 2-6, as the Tornados dropped their season-opening match 5-4.
Concordia Texas will have a long layoff before returning to the courts on Feb. 20 when they will host Schreiner at 1:30 p.m. at River Place Country Club in Austin, Texas.
