Tornados suffer heartbreaking loss in season finale

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Cayla Gonzalez scored her first goal of the season in the final seconds of the first half to tie the game, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's soccer team's season ended on a sour note, falling 2-1 to Howard Payne on Saturday at Citizens National Bank Field.

The Tornados were on the offensive attack all day, registering 21 shots, 10 of them being on goal.

The Yellow Jackets struck first though, finding the back of the net in the 27th minute to grab a 1-0 lead.

On a corner kick in the 45th minute, as the final seconds of the half ticked down, Gonzalez took the rebound of her initial shot and fired it past HPU's goalie Delaney Castor to level the game at 1-all at the end of the first half.

In the second half, CTX had multiple scoring opportunities as Emily Mowrer and Elisa LeBeouf both had shots on-goal in the first 10 minutes of the period, but Castor was there for the saves to keep the game tied.

The Yellow Jackets retook the lead at 2-1 in the in the 71st minute on a goal from Lindsey Schiller.

Mowrer nearly evened the game up at 2-all in the 84th minute but her shot was saved and the Tornados were unable to force extra time, falling 2-1.

The loss concludes CTX's shortened COVID-19 season and wraps up the careers of the program's three seniors in Gonzalez, Stephanie Rike and Brissa Renteria, but will return in the fall with a wealth of returners.
