Henderson's big day helps Tornados clinch ASC Tournament spot

AUSTIN, Texas – Antoine Henderson scored 20-plus points for the second straight game, tying his season-high with a 25-point output to lead the Concordia Texas men's basketball team to a 86-73 win over Sul Ross State and clinch a spot in the American Southwest Conference Tournament.

The Tornados shot over 50% from the field for only the fourth time this season, which included a 63% mark from the floor in the second half.

Henderson highlighted CTX's efficient scoring throughout the game, going 9-for-11 from the field and scoring all 25 of his points in the paint as the Tornados dominated the paint, outscoring the Lobos 46-26. Alexander Estrada, meanwhile, knocked down a team-high three 3-pointers, finishing with 11 points.

The first half was a chaotic back and forth tug-of-war from the opening tip as the game witnessed six lead changes, six lead changes and neither team had a lead larger than five.

Late in the period, trailing 29-27, the Tornados took the lead for good sparked by a Darryl Jones layup to tie the game up as a part of an 8-1 run that was capped off by Henderson's lay-in off an assist from Zaid Harris with 1:46 to go.

Henderson finished the half with a game-high 14 points, while Harris had two of his six assists in the first half and CTX headed to the locker room holding a 40-35 advantage.

In the second half, the Tornados found their shooting touch, going 17-of-27 from the field, while holding SRSU to 38% shooting from the floor.

Ethan Kieke and Luis Gonzalez both fueled CTX's second half offense, going a perfect 5-of-5 from the field together as each scored seven points and eight points, respectively.

Despite dealing with foul trouble, the Tornados continued to add to their lead throughout the half and took a 20-point advantage after a 9-0 spurt midway through the period thanks to back-to-back buckets plus the foul from Henderson and Trevon Hester followed by a trey from Gonzalez.

Henderson's final bucket of the day gave CTX its largest lead of the game at 78-55 and the team rolled to its second straight win, taking down the Lobos 86-73.

Sunny Ozoh finished the game with a near double-double, producing eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

With the win, the Tornados clinched the final spot in the ASC West Division as the fourth seed for the upcoming ASC Tournament. It is the team's ninth straight appearance in the conference tourney.

Concordia Texas will face the one seed in the west division, Mary Hardin-Baylor, on Wednesday in Belton, Texas at 6 p.m. with the winner moving on to the semifinals of the tournament.

The Tornados defeated the Cru in their season-opening game on the road 106-101, but have dropped the last two contests against UMHB, the most recent loss being back on Feb. 27.
