AUSTIN, Texas – In an all-around team effort, aided by
Ky'Lexus Block's double-double, the Concordia Texas volleyball team swept No. 7 Mary Hardin-Baylor for their first win over the Cru since 2015 as a part of a doubleheader split on Tuesday.
Short-handed entering the doubleheader, the Tornados dropped the first match of the night in four sets.
In the second match though, CTX put together a defensive team performance, where four players finished in double figures in digs and completed a sweep of UMHB 25-17, 25-17, 25-19, for their first victory over the conference rival since Sept. 18, 2015.
Block had a double-double in the win, racking up a team-high 15 kills along with 13 digs, as did
Georgia Quiroz, who tallied 41 assists and 14 digs. Meanwhile,
Laina DeLeon and
Sarah Ghormley each had 15 digs for the match.
In the first set, the Tornados used an early 12-4 run to gain an advantage. The Cru climbed back into it though, pulling within 21-16 after a service error, but CTX remained resilient, winning four of the next five points, including a pair of kills from
Jaya McCarty.
McCarty finished the match hitting at a .438 mark and tied her career-high with nine kills.
The Tornados continued a theme of an early lead, jumping out to a 14-7 edge after a 9-2 spurt in set two, which included three kills from
Nicole Deering. The New Braunfels, Texas native had a career-high seven kills in the match.
Mary Hardin-Baylor rallied though, using a run of their own to pull within two at 18-16. Concordia Texas did not crack, scoring seven of the next eight points to take a two-set advantage.
In the final set, it was the Block show as she recorded eight kills in the set and the Tornados used a late 5-0 run to pull away and complete the sweep, handing the Cru their first loss of the season.
In the earlier match of the night, CTX won the opening set, 25-20, but were unable to hang with UMHB, dropping the next three sets 20-25, 21-25, 18-25.
Block, Ghormley and Quiroz all finished with double-doubles in the loss, while DeLeon had a career-high 26 digs.
Block produced a game-high 20 kills and a career-high 19 digs, while Ghormley had 18 kills and tied her career-best mark with 21 digs. Quiroz, meanwhile, finished with 56 assists and added 15 digs.
The Tornados will continue their homestand, hosting Sul Ross State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
