Tornados fall short in ASC Tournament Championship

ABILENE, Texas – Marco Vazquez's penalty kick goal in the 34th minute was an early equalizer, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas men's soccer team came up short against the University of the Ozarks 3-1 in the American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship game on Saturday at the HSU Soccer Complex.

The Tornados were making their second straight conference tournament final appearance after defeating UT Dallas 3-0 on Thursday in the semifinals.

In the first half, CTX fell behind early as the Eagles found the back of the net in the 15th minute to grab a 1-0 lead.

Vazquez and the Tornados responded in the 34th minute though after a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity. Vazquez converted the penalty kick, firing into the right side of the goal to bring the game level at 1-all.

Concordia Texas finished with five shots in the half, but remained in a tie as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime.

In the second half, UO retook the lead with a goal in the 57th minute.

Vazquez nearly provided the game-tying goal in the 77th minute after a corner kick, but the Eagles' goalie Logan Valestin was there for the save.

Ozarks tacked on a goal in 87th minute on a counter attack and the Tornados were unable to mount a comeback, falling 3-1.

This concludes CTX's season as they qualified for their sixth straight ASC Tournament and advanced to the title game for the second consecutive season.

The team says goodbye to their seven seniors Joel Abrego, Brandon Barrows, Zack Kusak, Andres Williams, Edgar Guerrero, Adrian Guerrero and Ben Terry, but will return with a wealth of talent, including sophomore Vazquez, who finished the season as the team's leading goal scorer with seven goals in nine games.
