AUSTIN, Texas –
Claire Austin outlasted Gabrielle Ellewanger in a three-set thriller at line two singles, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's tennis team fell short to McMurry 7-2 on Saturday at the Austin Tennis Center.
The Tornados returned to the courts less than 24 hours after picking up a win over conference Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, looking for their third consecutive victory.
Concordia Texas had an uphill battle against the War Hawks, falling behind 3-0 after doubles play.
Isabella Wiik and
Natalia Goodman teamed up at line one and suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 (7-4) loss to McM's Claire Hillyer and Hope Turner. Meanwhile, at line three,
Emily Hines and
Alejandra Rueda were only broke once, but were unable to force a tiebreaker, coming up short 8-6.
In singles play,
Kaitlin Stevens and Austin picked up the lone wins for the Tornados.
Stevens recorded her seventh singles win of the season, holding off the War Hawks' Hannah DeFriend in the first set 7-5, and cruising to a 6-1 victory in the second set, earning a point at line four.
Austin, meanwhile, won the opening set 6-2 at line two, but dropped the following set 6-1 to head to a winner-take-all third. In the final frame, Austin prevailed with a 7-5 decision for the second point of the day for CTX.
The Tornados were unable to mount a comeback though, falling 7-2 in the team score.
Concordia Texas will return to the court on Saturday, hosting St. Thomas (TX) in a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. at the River Place Country Club in Austin, Texas to close out the regular season.
