Narvaez's game-winner lifts Tornados to first victory of the season

AUSTIN, Texas – Samuel Narvaez netted his first career goal in the 42nd minute, knocking in a strong right-footed strike and lifting the Concordia Texas men's soccer team to their first victory of the season over Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday.

Narvaez's game-winner was the only goal the Tornados required, taking a 1-0 victory over the visiting Prairie Wolves. Concordia Texas played stout defense throughout, keeping NWU at bay and allowing only four shot attempts.

The Tornados attacked the Nebraska Wesleyan defense from the opening whistle, as in the first 11 minutes Marco Vazquez fired three shots, Melvin Molina fired two, and Theo Givens fired one. Out of the gates, CTX applied pressure with the ball.

Nebraska Wesleyan's first shot came in the 15th minute, but Arlen Oni stood tall in the net and recorded a save.

Christian Barillas struck a pair of shots on-goal in the 23rd and 30th minutes, keeping the pressure on the NWU back line.

The Tornados broke the scoreless tie in the 42nd minute as Narvaez fired a ball into the left side of the goal, giving the Tornados a 1-0 lead after the first half of play.

The Tornados' back line, led by Zack Kusak, Bernabe Torres, and Yael Sanchez, played stifling defense, allowing only one shot for the remainder of the game. After 90 minutes of regulation, the Tornados left the pitch with a 1-0 victory.

Vazquez totaled nine shots on the afternoon, two of them on-goal, and Barillas recorded four shots on-goal. Oni manned the net for the entire 90 minutes, picking up two saves and keeping NWU scoreless.

With their first win in the books, Concordia Texas will look towards a road matchup with Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas on Monday at 7:30 pm.
