Perez, Velardez double-doubles lead Tornados past Ozarks

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Havyn Perez scored a game-high 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team staved off a late comeback to defeat University of the Ozarks 61-57 on Saturday.

Perez, who reached double figures in scoring for the third time in her last four games, was an offensive catalyst for the Tornados throughout the game, going 5-of-11 from the field as well as dishing out four assists. She also pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds, four of them coming on the offensive end.

Velardez, meanwhile, also produced a double-double, her fourth of the season. The Levelland, Texas native, scored all 10 of her points in the second half and added 11 rebounds.

In the opening quarter, Mikayla Johnson scored eight of her 10 points in the period, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers, but the Eagles shot over 46% from the field and led 19-17 after one.

The Tornados locked in defensively in the following frame, forcing six UO turnovers and holding the Eagles to under 28% shooting from the floor. Perez scored seven of the Tornados' 11 points in the period and the teams headed into halftime even at 28-all.

Concordia Texas created separation in the third period, outscoring the Eagles 19-13. Velardez scored five points in the frame and the Tornados closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the day at 47-41.

Kennedy Donovan, who had nine points for the afternoon, scored CTX's first six points of the quarter in the fourth, widening the lead to a 10-point advantage at 53-43.

Ozarks did not go away though, battling back with a 12-3 spurt to cut the lead to one.

Falyn Taylor came up clutch for the Tornados late in the period, hitting her second 3-pointer of the game to give CTX a 59-55 edge. Velardez knocked down two free throws in the final seconds and the Tornados held off the Eagles for a 61-57 victory on the road.

Next, CTX will return to Concordia Fieldhouse to host McMurry on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
