Tornados fall to Sul Ross State at home

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's basketball team suffered a loss to end their weekend, falling 72-53 to Sul Ross State on Saturday.
 
Kennedy Donovan posted 11 points and three assists while Jennika Willis scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds, but the Lobos spoiled their performance as they defeated the Tornados at home.
 
In the first quarter, SRSU ran out to a healthy lead, opening the game on a 17-0 run before a jumper from Falyn Taylor got the Tornados on the board with 3:06 remaining in the quarter.
 
Erin Toro and Natalie Velardez each picked up a bucket in the quarter, but CTX trailed 23-6 heading into the second period.
 
Donovan scored her first four points in the second quarter, posting the high mark for the Tornados in the period, but CTX was unable to close the gap. At halftime, Concordia Texas trailed the Lobos 32-17.
 
In the third quarter, Donovan earned a pair of early buckets, including a three-pointer, and brought the score to 36-22 with 7:41 to play in the period.
 
Allie Garza picked up five points in the quarter, draining a three-point shot with 2:38 on the clock, but the Lobos ended the quarter with two unanswered baskets. Heading into the final period, the Tornados fell behind 56-32.
 
The Tornados outscored Sul Ross State 21-16 in the fourth quarter behind seven points from Willis, but were unable to gain enough ground in the late stages of the game.
 
A turnaround jumper from Allese Crutcher brought the score to 63-45 with 5:17 remaining, but two straight buckets from SRSU extended the lead back out to 68-45.
 
At the final buzzer, the Tornados were unable to mount a comeback, ultimately falling 72-53.
 
With their weekend home stand complete, the Tornados will begin a two-game stint on the road as they travel to Jackson, Miss. to square off with Belhaven at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
