BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas men's basketball team almost overcame a 21-point second half deficit, but Schreiner University held on for a 103-98 win. DJ Pigford notched new career-highs with 29 points and five steals, while Donovan Stafford tallied his first double-double (23 points, 10 rebounds) of the season inside the Schreiner Event Center on Wednesday.
Luis Gonzalez (13 points, 3 rebounds) and Jaylon Johnson (12 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds) also reached double figures in scoring. Offensive was in abundance for both teams as Concordia (1-1) shot 42.9 percent (18-42) from three, and Schreiner shot 55.6 percent (20-36) from three.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game. They would extend their lead to as much as 17-7, before Pigford found Branden Myart for a three with 13:37 in the first half.
Fighting their way back into the game, the Tornados tied the game at 37-all with 3:29 remaining in the half. Schreiner would answer with a 18-3 burst to take a 55-40 advantage into halftime.
Schreiner would extend their lead to as much as 67-46, before back-to-back threes by Aldofo Martinez & Pigford initiated the comeback for Concordia. The Tornados stormed back with a made free throw by Josh Ogedegbe making it an 86-82 game with 6:26 left.
The Mountaineers extended their lead back up to 10 points, but CTX would respond again with an and-1 jumper by Gonzalez cutting it to 98-97 with 31 seconds remaining in the game. Schreiner would ultimately hold on to survive and win.
Concordia Texas will now head to to Georgetown, Texas to compete in the Southwestern Classic. They will first take on Texas Lutheran on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 12 p.m.
