Tornados suffer heartbreak against Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – DJ Pigford scored 15 of his team-high 17 points after halftime, but the Concordia Texas men's basketball team fell in an overtime heartbreaker to Sul Ross State, falling short 97-91 on Thursday in the Gallego Center.

The Tornados shot over 50% from the field and built up a lead as large as 21 points in the second half, but had it slip away in the final moments as the Lobos' bucket with six seconds remaining forced the teams into an overtime period.

In overtime, CTX regained the lead as Pigford knocked down a free throw to open the scoring, but SRSU countered with a 12-3 run and led 93-85 with under a minute to go.

Luis Gonzalez knocked down his third 3-pointer of the game to pull the Tornados within four at 95-91, but it was too late as CTX ran out of time and fell to the Lobos 97-91.

In the first half, the hot shooting of Sean Phillips off the bench provided the offensive spark for the Tornados.

The Bullard, Texas native went 4-of-5 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, for 12 points in the first half as CTX went into the locker room with a 34-30 lead. Phillips finished the night with 15 points on eight shots.

The Tornados extended their lead at the start of the second half, opening the period on a 21-4 run, aided by Pigford and Dylen Scales, who each had seven points and five points during the scoring outburst, respectively.

Scales' fast break layup gave CTX their largest lead of the night at 55-34 with 13:56 to go before SRSU chipped away.

Pigford finished with 11 points in the half on his way to producing a team-high 17 points and added six rebounds for the game. Meanwhile, Gonzalez scored eight of his 15 points in the second half and finished the night with four boards and two assists as well.

Antoine Henderson had a near double-double, tallying eight points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Donovan Stafford finished in double figures with 10 points.

The Tornados will look to bounce back on Saturday, traveling to Brownwood, Texas for their final regular season road game, taking on Howard Payne at 3 p.m. inside the Brownwood Coliseum.
