BROWNWOOD, Texas – Five players scored in double figures, led by
Havyn Perez's double-double performance of 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the Concordia Texas women's basketball team returned to the win column with a wire-to-wire 80-66 win over Howard Payne on Saturday.
The Tornados had dropped their last four contests, but found their offensive stroke against the Yellow Jackets, scoring their most points in a single game since an 86-71 victory back on Feb. 6, 2020.
Perez did it all for CTX, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds and dished out five assists.
Kennedy Donovan also produced a double-double, the first of her career, finishing with 10 points and a career-high 11 boards.
In the first quarter, the Tornados opened the game on a 10-0 run and did not allow a point till the 3:32 mark.
Mikayla Johnson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and CTX led 17-9 after one. Johnson was efficient from behind the arc, going 5-of-8 on the day and totaling 15 points.
In the second quarter, Johnson hit two more 3-pointers,
Erin Toro and
Havyn Perez each had four points and the Tornados went into the locker room with a 33-25 advantage.
Concordia Texas broke open the game in the third, scoring a game-high 26 points in the period, including 12 from Perez. Johnson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and gave the Tornados their largest lead of the game at 59-41.
Howard Payne climbed back into the game in the fourth quarter though, utilizing a 12-3 run to cut it to 71-65 with 3:40 to play. Concordia Texas held on, going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and secured an 80-66 victory.
Erin Toro also finished in double figures for the Tornados, tallying 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Cogborn had a 6-of-8 performance from the free-throw line and had 8 points off the bench.
Next, CTX will return home to begin their final homestand of the season, facing East Texas Baptist on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
