Tornados fall in ASC quarterfinal, end season in heartbreak

MARSHALL, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's basketball team closed out their season, falling in the American Southwest Conference Tournament quarterfinal to the no. 2 seeded East Texas Baptist 57-47 on Thursday.

The Tornados, marked as the no. 7 seed in the tournament, built a first-half lead over the hosting Tigers, but were unable to hold the lead as ETBU recovered in the second half. Ultimately, the season ended in heartbreak for Concordia Texas.

Havyn Perez turned in a stellar game, pouring in 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go along with ten rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Perez scored her first 14 points in the first half, including nine in the opening five minutes of the first quarter. A mid-range jumper at the 5:26 mark capped off seven unanswered points from the junior guard, giving the Tornados an early 11-4 lead.

The Tigers responded with an 11-0 run to close out the period, and the Tornados found themselves on the wrong end of a 15-11 advantage heading into the second quarter.

Perez opened the second quarter with an and-one three-point play and another bucket in the paint, cutting the ETBU lead to 18-16 with 6:45 to go in the half.

Falyn Taylor hit two three-pointers in the quarter, the first giving the Tornados a 21-20 lead at the 5:14 mark.

The Tornados entered the final minute of the quarter trailing by six, but answered with seven straight points. Mikayla Johnson connected on a pair of free throws, and Erin Toro followed with a jumper. Finally, Taylor's second three-ball came with seconds on the clock, giving the Tornados a 30-29 lead heading into the break.

The third quarter was quiet offensively, but ETBU outscored CTX 14-8.

After the Tigers took the lead early in the quarter, a pair of free throws from Natalie Velardez evened the score at 36-36 with 5:46 remaining in the period.

Madi Maxwell provided the final CTX points in the quarter, but the Tornados were in a 43-38 hole heading to the final period.

Perez began the fourth quarter with a basket in the pain, cutting the lead to 43-40, but ETBU followed with a 13-1 run, pushing their advantage to 57-41 with 2:09 remaining.

In the final two minutes, the Tornados scored six unanswered points but ultimately ran out of time, falling 57-47 after the final buzzer.

Concordia Texas wraps up the season with their tenth ASC Tournament appearance. They end the year with a 9-17, 7-13 ASC record, winning two of their last three regular season games to punch their ticket to the conference tournament.

The Tornados will say goodbye to their four graduating seniors, Allie Garza, Erin Toro, Falyn Taylor, and Natalie Velardez, but will return loaded with a roster full of talent and experience for the 2022-2023 season.
