JACKSON, Miss. –
Ellie Congalton went a combined 4-for-5 at the plate along with a walk and a run scored, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas softball team fell to Belhaven in a doubleheader on Saturday at McLeod Field.
In the first game of the day,
Erica Riley and
Ellie Congalton each recorded a pair of hits, but the Tornados left 10 runners on base, falling to the Blazers 7-1.
Concordia Texas opened the scoring in the first inning after a leadoff single by
Cristina Ayala. After a Riley single continued the inning, Ayala scored on a fielder's choice by
Hailee Tinajero to make it 1-0.
Belhaven responded in the second, pushing across a pair of runs to go in front 2-1.
The game came to a halt in the third as weather forced the teams off the field for a rain delay.
After a 30-plus minute delay, the teams returned with the Blazers continuing to add to their lead.
Belhaven scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth and sixth innings, widening their advantage to 7-1.
The Tornados had one final at-bat in the seventh with
Ashley Hallmark and Riley each producing one-out singles. They were stranded though as Tinajero and
Ryleigh Ward were retired and CTX fell 7-1.
In the second game of day, Congalton continued to be effective at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored, but CTX was unable to rally from an early deficit, falling 7-1.
The Blazers jumped out to a lead in the opening inning, scratching across a run on a sac fly. They broke open the game in the following frame, scoring six runs to make it 7-0 after two innings.
The Tornados responded in the fourth as Congalton led off the inning with a single. One out later, she scored on Tinajero's RBI single to cut it to 7-1.
Megan Hooper also had a pair of hits for the game, but CTX was unable to spark a late-game rally, ending the series with a 7-1 defeat.
The Tornados will look to bounce back when they return home to host UT Dallas in a three-game series. The series begins on Friday with a doubleheader set for a 4 p.m. first pitch at Tornado Field in Austin, Texas.
