Tornados drop doubleheader at Trinity

SAN ANTONIOErica Riley picked up four hits and three RBIs on the day, but the Concordia Texas softball was unable to take advantage, dropping both games of the doubleheader at Trinity on Saturday.

Riley went 4-for-7 on the day, smashing two doubles, driving in three runs, and scoring two. Emily Schmuck also turned in a good day at the plate, picking up three hits and scoring two runs.

Big innings cost the Tornados in both games, as Trinity scored all seven of their runs in the third inning of the first game and five of six runs in game two in the sixth inning.

In game one, the Tornados took an early 5-0 lead, but were unable to stop the Trinity comeback and ultimately fell 7-6.

The first inning began with a bang as Riley's first double of the game brought home Cristina Ayala and Ashley Hallmark, and Riley came around to score on an RBI single from Kylie Pavliceck. In the opening frame, the Tornados took a 3-0 lead.

The Concordia Texas offense struck again in the third. Riley's second double drove in another run, and she came around to score on a Trinity error, extending the lead to 5-0.

In the bottom half, the Trinity offense came alive, scoring seven runs on six hits and taking a 7-5 lead.

The Tornados cut into the deficit with an RBI double from the bat of Kylie Woods in the top of the sixth, bringing home Schmuck and shrinking the lead to 7-6.

With one last chance to tie or win the game in the seventh, Riley picked up a two-out base knock, but that was all for the Tornados. Ultimately, CTX fell 7-6 in game one.

The second game saw the Tornados take a 1-0 lead in the second, but they were unable to add to the total. Trinity scored six runs in the final three innings, and CTX dropped the game 6-1.

The Tornados' lone run was courtesy of an RBI double from Megan Hooper, giving them a 1-0 lead after two innings.

The first four innings were a pitcher's duel, as Chaynau Johnson allowed only two hits and no runs heading into the fifth.

Trinity tied the game in the fifth inning, scoring their first run on an RBI double and bringing the score to 1-1.

The sixth inning proved to be the crusher for CTX, as Trinity plated five runs on six hits and took a 6-1 lead.

In the seventh, Hailee Tinajero reached base after being hit by a pitch, but that was all for the Tornados, and they fell 6-1 in game two.

Concordia Texas will have a chance to bounce back on Friday, returning to American Southwest Conference play with a three-game set at Ozarks. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. in Clarksville, Ark.
