Volleyball Downed at Southwestern Tournament

Tornados will next play at ETBU on Tuesday

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas Volleyball team were upended in a pair of tightly contested matches in the 2022 Southwestern Tournament. The Tornados fell 3-1 to Augsburg University on Thursday inside the Concordia Fieldhouse on Thursday. On Friday, they were bested 3-1 by George Fox at the Robertson Center in Georgetown, TX.

Vs. Augsburg on Thursday: L, 3-1

Alyssa Legette posted a team-high 15 assists. Legette (10) Sarah Ghormley (11), and Kaitlyn Ruiz (11) all tallied double-digit digs for CTX. 

With the match tied 13-13 midway through the first set, Jaya McCarty set up Ghormley for a kill to give the Tornados the lead. This would be Concordia's final lead of the set as the Auggies took the lead and scored the last six points of set one.

Both teams traded points for a 9-9 total early in the second set. CTX then gained separation with a 5-1 run. Both teams traded 4-0 bursts midway through the second set, but a kill by Camryn Parker helped CTX cap off a 25-22 set win and deadlock the match at 1-1.

Scoring the first six points, Augsburg took control of the third set. A kill by Rayna Pack ignited a 3-0 run to cut the deficit in half. As action progressed, a 12-3 run in the set pushed Augsburg to a 2-1 advantage in the match.

A 9-1 sprint by the Auggies in the the fourth set gave them the separation needed to claim the victory in the set and match.

Vs. George Fox on Friday: L, 3-1

Ghormley (19 points, 16 digs) and Pack (12 kills) paced the Tornados in scoring. Sophomore Dani Wysocki led the team in digs (18) while freshman Selena Cooper had a team-high 16 assists.

George Fox edged out to an early advantage, but a kill by Ghormley would make it a 10-9 game and force a timeout by the Bruins. The Tornados would then take their first lead of game one at 12-11 when Rayna Pack tallied a point.

Neither team would go up by more than two points. With the score tied 22-22, George Fox earned three of the last four points to win game one.

With the score tied 10-10 in set two, a McCarty kill sparked an 10-4 run for the Tornados. Running away with the set, McCarty would put on the finishing touches of a 25-20 victory to tie the game up at one apiece.

The Bruins raced out to a 15-11 lead midway through the third set. The Tornados would storm back in front with a 8-3 burst following an ace by Wysocki. With the game knotted up at 22-22 later in the set, George Fox would score the final three points to take a 2-1 upper hand.

Down by as many as 5 points in set four, CTX found themselves in an early hole. The would gradually fight back into the game and would draw even at 14-14 thanks to a block by McCarty. The Bruins eventually pulled away in the fourth set with a 25-19 win to claim the match victory. 

Concordia Texas will next travel to Marshall, TX to face ETBU on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6 PM.
