Men and Women's Tennis Takes Down St. Thomas in Season Opener

The men swept the Celts 9-0, and the women claimed a 7-2 victory.

AUSTIN, Texas - In their season opener, the Concordia Texas men and women's tennis team took down the University of St. Thomas. The men swept the Celts 9-0, and the women won by a score of 7-2. Junior Trinity Klamecki highlighted the day by winning in straight sets inside the River Place Country Club on Saturday. 

Natalia Goodman also had an impressive showing with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Isabella Wiik claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win, while Isabella Cepeda won her match 6-3, 6-2. 

Kayla Pena had the match of the day in a 4-6, 6-1, 7-10 thriller on court one, and fifth-year Kaitlin Stevens collected a win via forfeit.

In doubles action, Cepeda and Pena earned an 8-3 win, while the duo of Claire Austin and Klamecki rounded out the scoring with a forfeit victory.

For the men, Joshua Bode and Adrian Munguia both tallied 6-2, 6-3 wins in singles action. Esteban Arredondo and Jorge Garcia competed in electric three-set matches where both came out victorious. Andres Padilla won 6-3, 6-3, while Daniel Beckles won 6-3, 6-2 in his debut to round out the singles action.

In doubles competition, the teams of Nico De La Pena / Arredondo and Evan Pena Jr. / Padilla both won 8-5 decisions. The duo of Bode and Munguia posted an 8-3 victory on court one to help preserve the 9-0 sweep for the men.

The Tornados will be back in action when they kick off conference play as they host Howard Payne next Friday, Feb. 10. First serve at Leander High School is set for 2 p.m.
