AUSTIN, Texas - In a match where each set was decided by two points, the Concordia Texas volleyball team was downed in a 3-1 decision against 19th-ranked Southwestern University. Freshman Brooklynne Fitzgerald posted a double-double (12 kills, 10 digs) inside the CTX Fieldhouse on Saturday.
In a tightly contested first set, both teams we tied at 23-all when the Pirates scored the final two points. In an almost identical second frame, the scorer was tied at 23-23 again when a pair of errors by Southwestern helped Concordia even the series.
The Pirates led 23-18 in game three, before kills by Rayna Pack & Fitzgerald combined for three straight points. The Tornados would come within one point, but Southwestern would find the final point for a 2-1 lead.Â
CTX jumped out to a 14-5 advantage in the fourth. Southwestern chipped away at the lead to only trail 15-12, before a kill by Malarie Mican sparked six straight points to extend their lead back out to 21-12. Concordia would be only one point away from forcing the decisive set, but the Pirates ended the match on a 5-0 run to escape with the victory.
Concordia Texas will now shift their focus to the SCAC Crossover in Abilene, Texas next weekend. They will first take on the host, McMurry, on October 12th at 1pm.
