Softball Takes Two in Doubleheader Against Southwestern

Megan Hooper connected on the school's first ever inside-the-park homerun in game two of the series.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas softball team claimed both games of a doubleheader with Southwestern University. The Tornados posted four runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out a 7-3 game one win, while Megan Hooper posted the school's first ever inside-the-park homerun in a 9-1 game two win at Roberts Family Field on Sunday.

GAME ONE: W, 7-3

Krista Burg was dominant in game one as she allowed no runners on base through the first three innings.

The Tornados got on the board early when a RBI-single by Kylie Kirk scored Grace Coleman in the bottom of the first. With Addison Lehew as the next batter, she brought Kirk home for a 2-0 lead. 

CTX upped the lead to 3-0 when a RBI-single up the middle brought Emily Schmuck home. The Pirates found life in the fourth as they tied the game at 3-all. They then loaded the bases with only one out in the top of the fifth, before the Tornados stiffened defensively to allow no runs.

Concordia posted the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth when Ellie Congalton doubled to left center and scored the pinch runner Christian Everett. Hooper then beautifully laid down a bunt to score Molly Olivarez from third. 

Pushing their lead to 6-3 was Congalton who advanced on the throw from third when Hooper stole second. Hooper then put on the finishing touches when she stole home.

GAME TWO: W, 9-1 (Six Innings)

Coleman got things started with a triple down the left field line in the first. Kirk brought her home, and then Kylie Woods recorded a bunt-RBI to score Mayson Post. Hooper then made it a 5-0 lead with her three-RBI, inside-the-park homerun.

Surging forward, Post singled up the middle to score Denaro for a 6-0 lead in the second. The Pirates got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fifth, but CTX matched the run in the bottom of the frame when Victoria Garza capitalized on an error and scored from second. 

Concordia put on the final touches in the bottom of the sixth when Zaleigh Perez slapped a RBI-double to left center & Coleman powered another RBI single to enact the run rule.

Concordia Texas will now head to Hawkins, Texas to take on Jarvis Christian College. in a doubleheader next Saturday, March 1st. First pitch is set for 2pm.
