EDWARD WELLS WENSLEY OF CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY (TEXAS), a junior on the men's cross country and track and field teams from Calgary, Canada, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 17.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
Edward, a Houston native, arrived at CTX after being recruited to join the cross-country team and has since made a significant mark both on and off the course. Now majoring in Law & Policy with a minor in Computer Science, he discovered his passion for public service after completing an internship at the Texas Capitol. The experience shifted his academic path and helped shape his long-term career goals.
In addition to his athletic commitments, Edward serves as Chief of Staff for the Student Government Association and as a Student Life Programmer, where he works directly with students and campus leadership to elevate the student experience.
As part of the Annette Strauss Institute's Texas Civic Ambassador program, Edward helped coordinate one of the most successful voter registration initiatives in Concordia's history, significantly increasing student participation in the electoral process.
Edward credits his professors and coursework at Concordia for preparing him to engage with diverse perspectives and build consensus—skills he hopes to carry into a future career in state politics.
He also encourages incoming student-athletes to embrace new opportunities.
"You never know how many opportunities are going to come your way," Wensley said. "Step out of your comfort zone and take advantage of every one of them."
Always striving for excellence, Edward shined within the cross-country program as he earned a new PR in the first four meets of the season this fall. With the completion of the cross-country season for the Tornados, they will now prepare for a successful spring semester on the track and within the community.
