BOX SCORE 2 AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas volleyball team swept Howard Payne in the home finale.
Jade Romero posted a career-high six aces in game two as the Tornados split a doubleheader with the Yellowjackets on Tuesday inside the Deb & Don Fieldhouse.
Game One: L, 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17)
Howard Payne led 5-4 early in the first set before surging to an 19-9 lead. A spike by
Kinlea Reeder initiated a run by the Tornados who closed the deficit to 24-23, but the Yellow Jackets would survive with the final point.
The Yellow Jackets notched the first four points of the match for an early advantage. CTX responded with a burst of their own where a kill by
Malarie Mican helped spark the Tornados to a 10-9 lead. The Tornados would then post a 6-1 run for a 16-13 lead. Howard Payne would close out the game on a 9-3 run to go up 2-0 in the series.
Concordia raced out to an 8-2 lead in the third set, but Howard Payne tied the match at 10-all. Gaining control once again, Concordia would post an 8-1 run capped off by a kill by
Camryn Parker. Another response by Howard Payne tied the match at 19-19, but Concordia would claim the set 25-22.
In the final set of game one, the score was tied 15-15 when a 10-2 run by the opponents closed out match.
GAME TWO: W, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21)
The Yellowjackets went up early in game one with a 6-1 lead. Clawing their way back into the match with a 20-19 score, Concordia would surge ahead with six of the final seven points with an ace by
Hannah Francis to cap the game.
Both teams traded runs in game two with Concordia leading 23-22 late in the set. Disciplined play by the Tornados would result in a pair of errors by Howard Payne to put CTX up 2-0 in the match.
Concordia led 10-7 in game three when a 7-0 run by the Yellow Jackets put them up midway through the match. With Concordia down 16-14,
Olivia Vu blasted the ball for a kill that sparked a 6-0 run for CTX. Late in the match with Concordia leading 23-21, Concordia would tally the final two points as an ace by
Amaya Horton ended the match.
Concordia Texas will next travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado to take on Colorado College this Friday, November 7th. First serve is set for 6pm CST.
