Nick Mims begins his fourth season as the head coach of the Concordia Texas men's soccer team.
The 2020-21 season was delayed and shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Tornados enjoyed another successful season under Mims, finishing with a 7-3 record overall and a 4-1 record in ASC play. Mims' squad made another deep tournament run, winning two matches and reaching the ASC Tournament Championship Game for the second straight year.
Eight Tornados earned All-ASC selections, highlighted by ASC Co-Offensive Player of the Year Marco Vazquez and Tri-Defensive Player of the Year Zack Kusak. Vazquez and Kusak, along with Edgar Guerrero and Joshua Redding, were named to the ASC First Team, and Bernabe Torres, Joel Abrego, and Victor Gomez were second-team selections. Finally, Adrian Guerrero earned his first career All-ASC selection after being named a member of the third team.
In 2019, Mims continued the upward success for the program, leading them to their first-ever ASC Tournament Championship Game appearance. The Tornados finished the season with an 11-6-4 record, including a 7-1-3 mark in conference play and taking second in the ASC standings, their highest finish in school history. The team advanced to the ASC title game after wins over Belhaven and Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first two rounds of the tournament, falling short to UT Dallas in the championship.
Concordia collected multiple conference awards as seven players were All-ASC selections. Zack Kusak, Marco Vazquez, Edgar Guerrero and Erik Rodriguez were all named to the ASC First Team, while Bernabe Torres, Joel Abrego and Jason Saco-Vertiz received ASC Second Team honors.
Rodriguez, who set the single-season school record for shutouts with eight, was voted the ASC Goalkeeper of the Year, while Torres was named the ASC Co-Defensive Freshman Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Mims shared ASC Coach of the Year honors, his first conference coaching award.
Nationally, the Tornados received recognition by the United Soccer Coaches as Vazquez was named to the All-West Region Second Team and Kusak earned All-West Third Team honors.
In 2018, his second year at the helm, Mims took the Tornados to the third-best season in program history, finishing 10-6-1, including an 8-3 record in ASC play, their most conference wins in school history. The Tornados reached the ASC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016, after finishing the season third in the conference standings.
Mims had seven players receive All-ASC honors, led by Omar Aguirre, who was named the ASC Offensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 17 goals, a program record.
Aguirre, along with Nash Cole and Rob Oakley, were ASC First Team selections. Aguirre was also named to the USC All-West Region Team, the third player in program history to earn the recognition and first since 2016. In the classroom, 12 Tornados earned ASC Academic All-Conference honors.
In 2017, his first season, Mims led the Tornados to an 8-5-2 record and helped them advance to the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the third straight season. The eight wins were the fourth-most in school history and helped CTX earned the number four seed in the ASC Tournament.
Mims has coached 21 all-ASC selections, including 10 ASC first team selections, one ASC Goalkeeper of the Year, one ASC Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year and one ASC Offensive Player of the Year. He also has had 38 players selected to the ASC academic all-conference team.
