Concordia Softball starts 2009 Strong

San Antonio, TX- The Concordia University Softball team swept Trinity University in a season opening double hitter in San Antonio on Saturday. Concordia won the first game 8-6 before taking the second game 5-1.

In game one, the Tornados started the scoring action in the third inning scoring four runs on four hits. Newcomer Carri Goree drove in three of Concordia's runs off a three-run homerun.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the third scoring three runs off four hits to come within one, 4-3 of the Tornados going into the top of the fourth.

Pre-Season Player of the Year, Jessica Rattan knocked in her first homerun of the 2009 season in the fourth, driving in two more runs for the Tornados. Concordia scored again in the fifth and seventh to give them the 8-6 victory.

In game two, all Concordia needed was the first inning to pick up the 5-1 victory and the sweep over Trinity University. The Tornados scored five runs in the first inning of three hits and two Tiger errors.

Offensively leading the Tornados was Carri Goree who drove in five runs of three hits.

From the mound Concordia was led by Lyssa Yates who pitched four complete innings allowing only three hits while facing 15 batters.

Next action for the Tornados will be their home opener against Sterling College in a double hitter on February 14, 2009 at Old Settlers Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm. Check back to the athletics website for full information about opening ceremonies.
