ROUND ROCK, Texas- Concordia University Texas Softball and Hardin Simmons softball decided to make their series a homerun contest. On day two the teams combined for nine homeruns as Concordia fell in game one, 8-7 and in game two 12-6.
Concordia 18-12 overall and 10-6 in ASC action Hardin Simmons 24-8 overall and 15-1 ASC
In game one, Hardin Simmons got on the board first off Taylor Haney's two run homerun to left center in the first inning. Then in the third inning, Haney struck again with another two-run homerun to put the Cowgirls ahead, 4-0 of the Tornados.
Carri Goree, Concordia's catcher, drove in one run for the Tornados off a single to leftfield scoring freshman
Lauren Vansickle to give them their first run of the day in the third inning. Concordia then came within one of the Cowgirls in the fourth inning scoring two runs off four hits.
Haney tied the ASC record for homeruns in a game in the fifth inning (3 total) with another two-run homerun to give Hardin Simmons the 6-3 lead.
With bases loaded in the sixth, Vansickle drove in one setting the stage for
Jessica Rattan as she blasted a three-run homerun over dead center over the wall to give Concordia the 7-6 lead.
Hardin Simmons wasn't finished though they took the 8-7 lead again in the top of the seventh of a single to centerfield that rolled to the fence scoring two Cowgirls which, was enough for Hardin Simmons as they shut out Concordia in the bottom of the seventh to pick up another ASC victory.
In game two, the homeruns continued as Vansickle knocked a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first for Concordia followed by a Goree solo-homerun. The Tornados went in to the top of the second with a 3-0 lead although; Hardin Simmons quickly tied the game scoring three runs on four hits.
The Tornados took the one run lead scoring one run in the third inning but the Cowgirls posted three more runs in the fourth to transition the lead yet again.
For the fifth time on day two of the series Hardin Simmons Namey, hit another homerun although this time it was a grand slam to give the Cowgirls the 11-4 lead.
Rattan hit her second homerun of the day in the bottom of the seventh to score two more for Concordia but that wasn't enough as the Tornados dropped game two 12-5.
Concordia will be back in ASC action as they take on the University of Mary Hardin Baylor on Tuesday April 14th and April 15th. The original ASC series between the Tornados and UMHB had to be rescheduled due to rain. Each of the doubleheaders will start at 5:00pm at Old Settlers Park at the Hall of Fame Complex.
