RICHARDSON, Texas --- The Concordia Texas men's soccer team went even on its American Southwest Conference weekend trip as the Tornados picked up a 3-2 double overtime victory Friday over East Texas Baptist, before falling to LeTourneau 1-3 on Saturday afternoon. CTX's current record now stands at (4-8, 2-6 ASC).
On Friday evening the Tornados took advantage of two Oscar Diaz goals to collect the overtime victory. Concordia was able to take the lead against ETBU (0-8-0, 0-6-0 ASC) on Brian Friend's first goal of the year in the 41st minute. Oscar Diaz then gave CTX a 2-0 advantage when the senior took a pass from Mathew Waltz and struck it past the ETBU goalkeeper.
East Texas Baptist came roaring back in the second period as Jeff Landrum beat CTX goalkeeper Jacob Stern to cut the deficit to one. The Tigers were forcing the action late and were able to score in the 89th minute on a Justin Bailey goal to force the overtime period.
Concordia was able to take control of the second extra session as Matthew Waltz fed another great ball to Oscar Diaz, and the senior found the back of the net for a 3-2 Tornados victory. CTX collected 15 shots in the match and goalkeeper Jacob Stern faced 27 ETBU shots, making six saves.
In the weekend finale on Saturday, the Tornados faced a spirited LeTourneau (7-6-0, 4-3-0 ASC) team that headed into the weekend in a tie for sixth in the American Southwest Conference. Both squads showed aggressive, physical play early, but LETU was able to get on the board first thanks to a Dillon Holt goal in the seventh minute.
CTX's Oscar Diaz then scored his sixth goal of the year off a Brian Friend assist pulling the match back to a 1-1 tie. LeTourneau seized the match shortly after as Patrick Thompson scored the game-winner for LETU off a free kick in the 41st minute. Patrick Tchekane chipped in another on a breakaway in the 79th minute to seal the 3-1 LETU victory.
Concordia collected nine shots, including four on goal in the match. Matthew Waltz, Oscar Diaz, and Brian Friend all recorded two shots while Jacob Stern made four saves.
The Tornados face the University of Dallas in non-conference action on Tuesday, before heading to the University of Texas-Tyler on Saturday.
