GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Concordia University Texas softball team dropped a pair of one run contests in a season opening doubleheader versus Southwestern University at Taylor-Sanders Field on Saturday. Southwestern (2-0) scored two runs in the seventh inning to defeat Concordia (0-2), 5-4, in game one. A two-run sixth inning helped the Pirates to a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
#Lauren Vansickle# paced Concordia offensively, picking up two hits on the day. Overall, Concordia managed to record only seven hits, but the Tornados did draw 13 bases on balls.
Three straight seventh-inning hits led to two runs, which sunk the Tornados in the opener. Southwestern received back-to-back singles before a double by Blair Wallace to the right center gap plated both runners on base in the comeback win.
Concordia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Southwestern answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Tornados reclaimed a two-run lead in the fifth. The Pirates picked up one run in the bottom of the sixth to set up the comeback win in the seventh.
Concordia managed just three hits in the contest. The first for CTX came off the bat of #Kassie Fuller#, which drove in the first run of the game for the Tornados. #Erin Duhon# and #Haylee Staton# each recorded hits in the game for the Tornados. #Meghan Ferrell# drove in a pair of runs for Concordia, while Vansickle had one RBI.
#Lyssa Yates# was saddled with the loss in the opener, hurling six-plus innings and allowing seven hits. Yates struck out five and walked two. Three of the five runs scored against her were counted as unearned. Lyndsy Maus came on in relief to pick up the win for Southwestern.
In the nightcap, the Pirates plated two first-inning runs off Concordia starting pitcher #Haylee Staton#. The Tornados answered with three runs in the top of the second inning to move back in front, 3-2. The three runs chased Southwestern starter Kaitlyn Pavlicek from the game.
After three and a half scoreless innings, Southwestern struck again in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Southwestern held Concordia scoreless in the top of the seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep. Staton received the loss after tossing five and one-thirds innings, while giving up six hits and four runs.
#Vicky Recek# and #Jana Tritz# each recorded one RBI. Vansickle posted two hits in the nightcap, while Tritz and #Candace Velasquez# each tallied one hit.
The Tornados will open up their 2010 home slate on Sunday in a doubleheader at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock against the University of Dallas. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
