GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Several defensive miscues by the University of Dallas allowed the Concordia University Texas softball team run away with both games of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Old Settlers Park. The Tornados (2-2) posted 10-1 and 6-1 wins on the day.
Concordia turned things around at the plate on Sunday, belting out 19 hits. #Candace Velasquez# paced the Tornados with four hits on the day.
In the opener, Dallas (0-2) struck first, scoring a first-inning run off CTX starting pitcher #Kat Moreno#. It would be the only run Dallas would muster in the first game. Concordia scored seven in the bottom of the first inning to claim control of the contest. Moreno settled down and proceeded to toss four consecutive scoreless innings. The Tornados would tack on insurance runs in the second and fourth innings to secure the run-rule win. Dallas committed four errors in the contest.
Moreno scattered four hits over five innings of work. She struck out five and walked three to pick up her first collegiate victory in her first appearance.
#Vicky Recek# and Velasquez each tallied two hits in the first game. Recek drove in three runs, while Velasquez scored two.
In the nightcap, the Tornados again relied upon the big inning plating four runs in the opening inning. CTX's first two runs came off a two-run homer from #Kassie Fuller#, which scored #Lauren Vansickle#. After Velasquez doubled and #Haylee Staton# singled, #Jana Tritz# singled, which scored Velasquez to give the Tornados a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, #Elizabeth Rojo# singled to score Staton, pushing Concordia ahead 4-0.
Dallas scratched across a run in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly off CTX starter #Lyssa Yates#. Concordia would extend its lead to five in the bottom of the sixth inning. Fuller doubled to left field, scoring Recek, who reached earlier in the inning on a walk. The final Tornado run was provided on a RBI single by Tritz, which sent Fuller home.
Yates and Staton combined to hold Dallas to three hits on the day. Yates recorded her first win of the season, while Staton earned the save. Yates hurled four innings, allowing two hits and one run, while striking out four and walking three. Staton yielded just one hit in three innings with four strikeouts and four walks.
Fuller, who drove in three runs, was one of five Tornados with two hits in the second game.
CTX will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the University of Texas-Tyler at 4 p.m.
