ROUND ROCK, Texas -- A sacrifice fly off the bat of #Erin Duhon# in the first game and a three-run third inning propelled the Concordia University Texas softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Schreiner University on Friday at Old Settlers Park. CTX (5-7, 2-0 ASC) won the opener 3-2 and the nightcap 5-3.
The Tornados took a first inning lead over the Mountaineers in the opener as #Lauren Vansickle# led off the first inning with a solo home run to right field. #Jessica Rattan# drove in #Kassie Fuller# with a double to center field. Fuller reached one batter earlier on a double of her own.
After Schreiner (2-8, 0-2 ASC) tied up the game with a pair of runs in the third inning, Concordia would score the game-winning run in the fifth. The fifth inning started as Fuller struck out swinging but reach due to a wild pitch on the third strike. Rattan followed with a double sending Fuller to third base. Two batters later Duhon flied out to right field, which was deep enough to drive in Fuller.
Rattan finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate. Freshman right-hander #Haylee Staton# picked up her first collegiate win after hurling a complete game.
In the nightcap, CTX jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Schreiner climbed back into the contest with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, pulling the score to 4-3. The Tornados would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth as Fuller powered a single through the left side of the infield, scoring #Melanie Lynch#. Lynch came on to pinch run for #Elizabeth Rojo#, who singled earlier in the inning.
CTX received a solid pitching performance from #Kat Moreno# (3-1), who earned the win after tossing all seven innings. She scattered five hits and surrendered two earned runs while striking out four.
The Tornados and Mountaineers will play another doubleheader at Old Settlers Park on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. Both of those games will be carried live on the Tornados Sports Radio Network.
