ABILENE, Texas -- Three sixth inning runs in the first game of a doubleheader allowed the Concordia University Texas softball team to come from behind to claim a 4-3 win over Hardin-Simmons on Thursday at Ellis Field. Concordia (14-10, 11-3 ASC) was unsuccessful in recording the sweep, however, as the Cowgirls (16-5, 9-1 ASC) won the nightcap, 3-2, on a wild pitch.
In the opening game, Concordia fell behind 2-1, but plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Hardin-Simmons managed only one more run and the Tornados held on for the 4-3 win.
Freshman right-hander #Haylee Staton# picked up the win for CTX after scattering 10 hits, giving up one earned run and striking out nine during a complete game performance.
In the nightcap, HSU scored two first-inning runs to claim an early lead. Concordia answered in the top of the sixth as #Jessica Rattan# hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the seventh, HSU received a single and advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. The same runner advanced to third on a wild pitch and would eventually score on another wild pitch, giving Hardin-Simmons the win in the bottom of the seventh.
Concordia and Hardin-Simmons will meet again on Friday in a doubleheader at Ellis Field, beginning at 12 p.m.
