BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas – Despite playing a man up for most of the match and getting a go-ahead goal from
Dustin Ratheal, the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss against Centenary on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Vandegrift High School's Monroe Stadium.
Concordia (5-6-1) netted the match's first goal in the 28th minute courtesy of Ratheal.
Matt Ruhe appeared to overshoot his target when he made a pass inside the box, but
Christian Fredrickson saved the ball from going out of bounds on the left endline. With the goalkeeper starting to chase the ball and getting out of position, Fredrickson sent a pass in front of the goal mouth that was tapped into the net by Ratheal.
Centenary (8-3-1), however, had an immediate answer just 2:34 later. Shortly after a corner kick was taken, RB Asenime finished a pass by Ryan Christianson to even up the score at 1-1 before the break.
Even though the Gents had to play a man down the rest of the way after Adam Ghaemmagha was sent off the field for a dangerous foul in the 43rd minute, the visitors were able to take the lead midway through the second half. Christianson headed in a free kick taken by Kyle Mehnert from midfield for what would later stand as the game-winning tally.
Concordia did not go down without a fight and had its chances until the very end when Fredrickson was taken down in the box to give the squad a penalty-kick opportunity.
Sebastian Parra was given the golden opportunity to potentially force overtime, but his shot was saved by a diving Robbie Ramirez. The ball was cleared and the final whistle sounded shortly afterwards.
Concordia's
Todd Edgington turned away seven of the 19 shots he faced in the losing effort. Centenary's Ramirez also made seven saves on 16 opportunties, which included the clutch stop on the penalty kick to keep the Gents ahead.
Concordia, which is in the hunt for its first-ever American Southwest Conference postseason berth, visits Texas-Dallas on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
