GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Kerrville, TexasKat Moreno hurled a one-hit shutout in the opener and Lauren Vansickle added two more hits in the nightcap to finish the weekend with eight as the Concordia University Texas softball team swept Schreiner in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12 at Mountaineer Stadium. The Tornados won game one, 3-0, before taking game two by a 2-1 decision.

Concordia was able to get on the scoreboard first in the opener by pushing one run across in the fourth. Moreno, who was in the process of pitching a perfect game at the time, singled to lead off the inning before being sacrificed over to second by Smith. Moreno then scored two plays later when Candace Velasquez reached on an infield error.

One inning later, the Tornados added two more runs to give Moreno all the insurance she would need. With two outs and the bases loaded, Smith belted a two-run single which scored Jessica Rattan and Jordan Berry. Moreno only issued two walks the rest of the way to allow the Tornados to hold on for the win.

Moreno improved her record to 5-4 with her second shutout victory of the season for Concordia. She allowed one hit and fanned four while walking two Mountaineer hitters. Schreiner's Rebecca Hay dropped to 2-3 after yielding nine hits and three runs, including two earned, in the losing effort.

Concordia (12-6, ASC 3-1) struck early in the nightcap to go ahead by a 1-0 score. Vansickle led off the game with a single and came home three plays later courtesy of an Erin Duhon double.

Schreiner (3-7, ASC 1-3), however, came back and was able to tie the game up in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Kelsey Ambrose. She was able to send Hay home while advancing to second on the throw.

But despite being held to only three hits, the Tornados were still able to find a way to manufacture what would stand as the winning tally in the sixth. With Erin Fredenburg on second and two outs on the board, Meghan Ferrell reached on an error by the shortstop to plate the deciding run.

Concordia's Teylor Schiefelbein improved to 6-2 by earning her third victory in as many tries over a five-day span. She allowed eight hits and one run to score while striking out three Mountaineer batters. Schreiner's Allyson Morris took the loss and fell to 1-4 despite giving up only three hits and two runs, including only one that was earned.

Concordia will host Sul Ross State for a four-game series at Old Settler's Park next weekend, which begins with a doubleheader on Friday, March 18 at 5 p.m.
