Round Rock, Texas – Freshman Jordan Berry had a combined four hits, including three doubles, and classmate Teylor Schiefelbein registered her first collegiate shutout in the nightcap to propel the Concordia University Texas softball team to a twinbill sweep against Sul Ross State on Friday, March 18 at Old Settler's Park. The Tornados have won nine of their last 10 games.

While Kat Moreno was flirting with a no-hitter, Concordia (14-6, ASC 5-1) broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fifth of the opener when Berry blasted an RBI double to left center which scored Lauren Vansickle. Sul Ross State (0-16, ASC 0-6), however, fought back and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a single by Clarissa Lara.

But with runners at first and second in the bottom of the sixth after Candace Velasquez and Jessica Rattan drew walks, Vansickle came up with the big hit the Tornados needed on the blustery afternoon to escape with the win. The junior hit what appeared to be a routine flyout to left, but the wind carried the ball towards the line and knocked it down. Velasquez and Rattan were able to score on the play, and Moreno induced three groundouts in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Coming off a one-hit shutout performance against Schreiner, Moreno improved to 6-4 as the winning pitcher for Concordia. She allowed only two hits, one run and issued just one walk while striking out seven. Sul Ross State's Betsy Anderson took the loss and fell to 0-9 by surrendering five hits and three runs which were all earned. She also issued five walks.

Concordia (14-6, ASC 5-1) jumped out on top early in the nightcap by scoring once in the first and twice in the third. Following one-out singles by Vicky Recek and Berry, Rattan belted a two-run double to the gap in deep left center. Despite leaving five runners on base over the first two innings, the hosts were still able to get the insurance they needed in the third courtesy of an RBI single by Meghan Ferrell and a sacrifice fly by Velasquez.

Rattan, who went a combined 2-for-3 with two walks in the doubleheader, helped to pad the lead for the Tornados when she tripled down the line in right with two outs on the board. The hit allowed Berry, who registered her third double of the day, to score. Schiefelbein, who only allowed two runners to reach base, took care of the rest by keeping the Lobos off the board the rest of the way.

Concordia's Schiefelbein won her fifth straight decision to improve to 7-2 this spring. She allowed only two hits and fanned two batters while not issuing a walk. Josephine Borrego, who was making her collegiate debut for Sul Ross State, was tagged with the loss. She allowed five hits and one run, which was earned, over two innings of work.

Concordia, which has given up just two runs in its last four games, will host Sul Ross State for another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12 p.m.
