GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Seguin, Texas –
Kat Moreno took a no-hitter into the final inning before registering her fourth victory in a row in the opener and
Teylor Schiefelbein won her seventh straight decision in the nightcap as the Concordia University Texas softball team swept a twinbill against Texas Lutheran on Thursday, March 24 at Morck Field. The Tornados, who won the first game by a 7-1 score and the second by a 7-2 decision, scored 11 unearned runs as the result of a combined 10 Bulldog errors to extend their winning streak to nine straight.
In the opener, Concordia (18-6, ASC 9-1) scored four times in the first inning and never looked back. After two consecutive errors loaded the bases,
Jessica Rattan drew a walk to plate
Lauren Vansickle and start the scoring. The Tornados doubled their lead when
Erin Duhon grounded out to the short on the next play before
Meghan Ferrell hit a two-run single to make it a 4-0 game.
Three innings later, Concordia tacked on three more runs to get all the insurance it needed to pull out the victory.
Vicky Recek singled to lead off the inning, and Berry and Rattan followed with an RBI double and an RBI triple, respectively, to extend the Tornado advantage to seven.
Kat Moreno, meanwhile, was flirting with what could have been her first no-hitter until it was finally broken up by Katelyn Hoppel with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Megan Carmichael drew a bases-loaded walk three plays later to put the Bulldogs on the board, but it was too little and too late, as Moreno induced a groundout to end the game on the very next play.
Moreno went the distance for Concordia and improved her record to 8-4 on the season after firing a two-hitter. She allowed one run, which was earned, and fanned four batters. She has won her last four starts, allowing only five hits and two runs in that span. Texas Lutheran's Jordan Mundine was tagged with the loss and fell to 4-7. She surrendered eight hits and seven runs, including, three earned, while striking out four and issuing three walks.
Both teams scored twice in the fourth inning of the nightcap to create a 2-2 tie just past the midway point of the contest.
Erin Duhon singled in the first run, which scored as the result of another Bulldog error, and scored the second on the next play when Ferrell reached on a defensive blunder by the opposing shortstop.
After a two-run single by Stephanie Childs knotted the score at 2-all through four innings, the Tornados regained the lead for good by plating one unearned run in the fifth when
Teylor Schiefelbein singled and came all the way home due to an error by the Bulldog right fielder. Concordia got all the insurance it needed by pushing four more unearned runs in the top of the sixth, including three on a bases-clearing single by Recek, in which all the runners came home as the result of another error in right field.
Schiefelbein, who relieved
Teshia Krause in the fourth, picked up her seventh straight victory and improved to 9-2 overall this spring for Concordia. She fanned one hitter, allowed two runs which were unearned, and extended her streak of not issuing a walk to 18 consecutive frames. Texas Lutheran's Carmichael suffered the loss to drop to 3-7 despite not giving up an unearned run. She struck out five Tornado batters and walked four while yielding nine hits.
Concordia, which has won 13 of its last 14 games, and Texas Lutheran (7-15, ASC 0-6) will face off again for another doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 beginning at 1 p.m.
