Farmers Branch, Texas
– Meghan Farrell went 2-for-3 and drove in a career-best five runs in leading the Concordia University Texas softball team to an 8-7 victory over Texas-Dallas in the first game of the second day of play at the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament on Saturday, March 5 at Oran Good Park. Kat Moreno hurled a three-hit shutout to pace the Tornados to a 4-0 win against Ozarks later in the afternoon.

After Texas-Dallas (5-4) scored once in the top of the first, Concordia plated four runs in the bottom half of the same inning to jump out to a quick 4-1 advantage in the opener for both teams. Jessica Rattan and Ferrell each drove in two runs on a double to left and a single up the middle, respectively.

The Comets trimmed the lead to one when Caysie Norum clubbed a two-run homer to center in the third inning, but the Tornados added another four runs in the fifth to go ahead by an 8-3 score. Ferrell delivered a three-run double to the gap in right center before Jordan Berry closed out the scoring with an RBI single to center.

Texas-Dallas, which left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings, made a fierce attempt to rally in the top of the seventh. Makesa Richey hit a one-out solo shot to get things going, and Kayla Moore followed with a bases-loaded single down the line in left three batters later. Two more runs came home on a walk and a single up the middle to slash the Tornado lead to one, but freshman hurler Teylor Schiefelbein induced a groundout with the bases loaded to end the game.

Concordia's Schiefelbein improved to 3-2 by going the distance to earn the victory despite yielding 16 hits and seven runs, including four earned, while issuing three walks. Foust suffered the loss and fell to 3-2 after giving up nine hits and eight runs which were all earned. She fanned one hitter and walked four players.

Concordia's second game of the day against Ozarks (3-7) began as a pitcher's duel before the Tornados eventually broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth. Lauren Vansickle led off the frame with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a Rattan groundout to short. On the next play, Erin Duhon singled through the left side to plate the game's first run.

The Tornados batted around in the sixth inning and took advantage of two Eagle errors to get the insurance runs they needed for their second straight win. Rattan, who started the frame with a double to left center, came home when Duhon reached on a throwing error by Eagle third baseman Kelsey Mefford. Alex Smith singled two plays later to make it a 3-0 game. Ferrell then came home for an unearned run later in the inning when Schiefelbein reached on a fielding error by Heather Roberts, who stepped in for Mefford at the hot spot during a pitching change earlier in the frame. Working with a 4-0 lead, Moreno recorded two strikeouts and induced a popup to keep the Eagles off the board in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

Moreno improved her ledger to 3-3 by hurling her first shutout of the season. She allowed three hits and fanned eight batters while issuing four walks. Porter dropped to 0-3 with the loss, surrendering 11 hits and four runs, including two earned, in 5.1 innings of work.

Concordia (7-5) hosts Southwestern for its first home doubleheader of the season at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock on Tuesday, March 8 at 5 p.m. The two teams split a twinbill in Georgetown last weekend.
