GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Brownwood, Texas – Lauren Vanisckle had a combined three hits and
Jessica Rattan blasted her second home run in as many days, but the Concordia University Texas softball team was swept by Howard Payne in a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 16 at Lady Jacket Field. By splitting the four-game series and losing the last two by 4-1 and 4-3 decisions, the Tornados will have to put their playoff hopes on hold until the final week of the regular season.
After dropping the opener, Concordia started the nightcap off strong by scoring the first three runs. Rattan went yard to left field for the fifth time this season following a
Teylor Schiefelbein single to give the Tornados a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before Vansickle plated the third tally by doubling to the opposite field one inning later.
Howard Payne (14-22, ASC 12-10), however, was able to rally and score four unanswered to close out the game. Carissa Zarate hit a bases-clearing double in the fourth to tie up the game and scored what would stand as the winning run in the sixth due to a Tornado error in the infield.
Concordia's Schiefelbein, who hurled her first career no-hitter yesterday, suffered the loss and dropped to 11-6. She gave up six hits and four runs, including two earned, over six innings. Howard Payne's Kayla Castillo picked up the win and upped her ledger to 3-8 by pitching five scoreless innings of relief. She allowed three hits and struck out five.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first run of the afternoon due to a defensive miscue by the Tornados in the bottom of the first inning in the opener, but the visitors were able to knot the score at 1-all courtesy of an infield single by
Vicky Recek in the top of the second. Howard Payne quickly recovered and went ahead for good when Haleigh Caraway came home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the same inning. Sacrifice flies by Katie Poerner and Caraway in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, provided insurance and put the game on ice.
Moreno was credited with the defeat and fell to 9-8 on the year. The sophomore went the distance and surrendered four hits and four runs, which were all earned, while striking out four and walking three. Baillie Trumble earned the victory and improved to 3-6 by allowing four hits and one run in three innings of work.
Concordia (22-14, ASC 13-7) will look to earn a playoff berth when it hosts first-place Mary Hardin-Baylor for a doubleheader on Thursday, Apr. 21 beginning at 5 p.m.
