Lewisville, Texas – Jordan Berry had two hits, including an RBI single that continued an attempted rally in the top of the seventh, but the Concordia University Texas softball team fell by a 6-2 score to Texas-Tyler in the opening game of the ASC Tournament on Thursday, Apr. 28 at Toyota Railroad Park. The Tornados were able to outhit the Patriots in the matchup, but the squad came up short after leaving nine runners on base, and five in scoring position, over the seven frames.
Texas-Tyler (32-9), which entered the tournament ranked 16th in the nation, got some clutch hits and took advantage of a few Tornado errors to push one run across in the first, second and fourth frames. An RBI single by Whitney Wiley put the Patriots on the board in the first, and a bunt single an inning later by Jessie Bross sent home another runner to double the lead. Taylor Petrick scored from second due to a throwing error to gun down Bross at first before Bross singled in the team's third run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Patriots were able to do break the game open and make it 6-0 by scoring three times in the fifth, but the Tornados did not go down without a fight. After leaving runners at first and second in the second inning as well as first and third in the fourth and sixth innings, Concordia got on the board when Lauren Vansickle hit into a fielder's choice. Marisa Ayala, who singled to start the attempted rally, scored on the play.
Batting with runners, Berry blasted an RBI single to left that scored Teylor Schiefelbein and made it 6-2. Jessica Rattan then singled to left, loading the bases and setting the stage for Erin Duhon. The sophomore, however, flied out to Katelyn Thomason in left to end the game.
Concordia's Schiefelbein suffered the loss and fell to 12-8 on the year after allowing seven hits and six runs, including five earned, over 4.2 innings of work. She recoreded two strikeouts and one walk. Stacy Shepherd picked up the win by Texas-Tyler and improved to 12-3 by yielding nine hits and two unearned runs in 6.2 innings. She fanned five and issued only one walk. M'Lynn Tillery, who came into the game with two outs and faced one batter with the bases loaded, picked up her second save of the season.
Concordia (24-17) will face Mississippi College in an elimination game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. The winner will play in another elimination later in the day at 6:30 p.m. against either Hardin-Simmons or Mary Hardin-Baylor.
