BELTON, Texas – Matthew Butler scored a goal in the 46th minute and helped the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw at I-35 rival Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday night.
Butler scored on a breakaway after being sent free with an assist by
Marshal Tucker in the opening minute of the second half. It marked his team-leading fifth score of the season.
However, the Cru (5-5-2, 2-1-2 ASC) answered five minutes later.
Mary Hardin-Baylor built an attack on the right wing before John Williams served the ball across the box where Case Carnes headed it in, just inside the far post to tie the match.
Neither team was able to break through the rest of the way.
The Tornados (5-6-2, 0-3-2 ASC) picked up their second point in conference play.
UMHB led Concordia Texas in shot attempts, 16-9, including a 5-4 edge in shots on target.
Kyle Duncan came up with four saves in his first start of the season in goal.
Alejandro Labastida led the Tornados with two shot attempts, including one on goal.
Concordia will continue its road trip on Friday, Oct. 24, at Texas-Tyler. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
NOTES:• Concordia Texas claimed the regular season series with its rivals, winning one game and earning a tie on Saturday against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
• Both games of the I-35 rivalry were played in Belton this season. CTX won the first matchup on Sept. 26, a non-conference tilt, 1-0.
