Johnson's buzzer-beater propels Tornados past Cru on Saturday, 73-71

BELTON, Texas – Isis Johnson scored 15 points, drilling the winner jumper that went in at the buzzer, to help the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team knock off I-35 rival Mary Hardin-Baylor 73-71 Saturday afternoon at Mayborn Campus Center.

The Tornados (1-5, 1-2 ASC), who buried 12 3-pointers, picked up their first win of the season following the buzzer-beater.

Johnson was one of three Concordia Texas players to reach double figures. Camille Horman had a team-high 17 points after connecting on five triples, while Emily Cullers chipped in with 16, including 12 from behind the three-point line.

The Tornados shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the floor, including 50 percent (12-for-24) from beyond the arc. Concordia also shot 75 percent from the free-throw line, but only on four attempts.

The Cru (5-2, 1-2 ASC) received 19 points from Alyssa Dean, while Taylor Tucker and Bridjai Chaney each registered double-doubles. Tucker scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Chaney tallied 10 points and 12 boards.

Chaney hit a pair of free throws that gave UMHB a 69-65 lead with 2:52 to play. On the ensuing possession, Ally Terry was fouled and connected on one of her two attempts from the charity stripe to cut the Cru's lead to three points.

After each team came up with empty possessions, Ashlyn Ward banked in a three-pointer to allow CTX to pull even.

Chaney again put Mary Hardin-Baylor in front with a jumper.

However, the rest of the game belonged to Johnson.

With 1:13 remaining, Johnson hit a jumper that tied the contest at 71-71. UMHB then missed on two shot attempts before Johnson was able to pull down the rebound.

The Tornados brought the ball up past the timeline before calling a timeout with 15 seconds to play. Following the break in action, Ward found Isis on the baseline who hit the jumper as time expired.

Concordia will return home to face Louisiana College on Saturday, Dec. 20. The opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Concordia Fieldhouse.
