BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's basketball team dropped a 73-59 decision to Howard Payne in an American Southwest Conference (ASC) contest on Saturday at Brownwood Coliseum.
The Lady Jackets (5-1, 2-0 ASC) shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field en route to their second straight league victory. Danyel Bradley led Howard Payne with 21 points, while Sarah Van Remmen chipped in with 16. Jessica Galaviz grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Tornados (0-5, 0-2 ASC) had three players scored double figures, led by
Isis Johnson's 16 points.
Ashlyn Ward tallied 13, while
Emily Cullers netted 10 off the bench.
Concordia Texas shot 34.8 percent (24-of-69) from the floor. The Tornados connected on 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) 3-point attempts, but shot only 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from the free-throw line.
The Lady Jackets led by as much as 11 in the first half, but CTX cut it to 33-28 at halftime.
Concordia then cut the deficit to two points in the first three minutes of the second period, but a 16-5 run by Howard Payne over the next seven minutes pushed the advantage back to double digits.
The Tornados were able to get within 63-57 after
Nadine Fadelle converted a turnover into a fastbreak layup. However, the Lady Jackets answered again with a 10-2 spurt to close out the contest.
Concordia will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Mary Hardin-Baylor (5-1, 1-1 ASC). Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
