ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Concordia University Texas softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Southwestern on Tuesday night at Old Settlers Park.
The Tornados (13-12) dropped the first game, 3-2, but rallied with three runs in the seventh inning to win the nightcap, 7-6.
Noey Ruiz provided the game-winner on a walk-off single, which sent
Sydney Coffey plateward.
The Pirates (9-14-1) picked up a come-from-behind victory in the opener with two runs in the seventh.
In the second contest, Southwestern built a 6-4 advantage, but Concordia Texas began chipping away in the final frame.
Hanna Contreras led off with seventh with a solo home run, her eighth of the season. Two batters later,
Katie Schmidt drew a walk. Coffey followed with a double to push Schmidt to third base.
Valerie Gonzales then hit a single through the right side that scored Schmidt and set up Ruiz's heroics.
Ruiz put a singled into right field that allowed the winning run to score.
Contreras and
Jessica Parish each tallied three hits to paced Concordia's offensive attack on the day. Parish had four RBIs, while Contreras drove in three.
Coffey (5-6) was the pitcher of record in both games for the Tornados. The right-hander earned the win in the finale with one scoreless inning of relief where she logged a pair of strikeouts.
Concordia will return to action this weekend, as it travels to play I-35 rival Mary Hardin-Baylor in a league series.
