ROUND ROCK, Texas – Hardin-Simmons scored three runs in the seventh inning of the opener, and the Cowgirls rode the momentum of the comeback win to sweep an American Southwest Conference (ASC) doubleheader from Concordia University Texas on Friday at Old Settlers Park.
The Tornados (8-8, 6-5 ASC) took a 3-1 lead into the seventh of the first game, but Hardin-Simmons (7-7, 5-6 ASC) scored three unanswered runs to log the come-from-behind victory.
Sarah Truelove led off the final panel with a double, but was erased whle trying to get to third base on Nathalie De La Torre's fielder's choice. However, Jayme Ashley reached on an error to restart the rally. Following an infield fly, Mac Clay walked to load the bases. Sydnie Darden then singled to left field to score two runs, which tied the game. Carley Willis followed with a run-scoring hit that drove in Clay and gave the Cowgirls a one-run advantage.
In the bottom of the stanza,
Sydney Coffey led off with a triple.
Katie Carrizales then flied out to left field. Coffey tried to score, but was called out for leaving early. Keeley Lowrance retired the final batter to close out the contest.
Lowrance (5-2) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win.
Meanwhile, Coffey (2-3) gave up four runs (one earned) and nine hits in a complete-game effort.
In the nightcap, Hardin-Simmons received a two-hit gem from Emily Hardaway (2-3) to complete the sweep. She gave up only a pair of singles while leading the visitors to an eight-run victory in six innings.
The Cowgirls pounded out 15 hits and scored in four of their six at-bats to pick up the win.
Zalysa Perez (5-4) yielded 11 hits and seven runs in four stanzas for the Tornados.
The set concludes with a 10 a.m. tilt on Saturday.
