ROUND ROCK, Texas – Texas-Dallas scored a pair of go-ahead runs in the fourth inning, and the Comets held on for a 3-1 victory over the Concordia University Texas softball team in an American Southwest Conference (ASC) series opener on Thursday night.
Texas-Dallas (18-17, 11-17 ASC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Tornados (15-20, 12-16 ASC) tied up the contest in the bottom of the frame on
Jessica Parish's run-scoring single.
Three panels later, the Comets picked up two runs on Sara Navarro's single to right field.
Concordia Texas, which dropped its eight straight game on Thursday, was unable to break through in the rest of its at-bats.
The Tornados did threaten in the seventh after
Katie Schmidt drew a one-out walk. However, Comets starting pitcher Sara Davison induced back-to-back groundouts to strand Schmidt on the bases and end the contest.
Davison (4-8) scattered five hits and allowed only one run while striking out five in the complete-game effort.
Sydney Coffey (6-10) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits while going the distance.
Alexis Lynn and
Hanna Contreras both were 1-for-3 with a double, while Lynn scored the only run for CTX. Parish was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while
Jessica Borrego and
Valerie Gonzales also both recorded singles.
The series is scheduled to conclude with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. Friday.
