AUSTIN, Texas – Southwestern took advantage of six Concordia University Texas errors en route to a 7-5 victory on Friday at Tornado Field.
The 23rd-ranked Tornados (3-2), who had their three-game winning streak snapped, allowed six unearned runs.
The Pirates (1-1) scored two runs in the first and two more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. However, Concordia Texas answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a one-run advantage.
After a pair of scoreless panels, Southwestern tied the game on Scott Gilbert's pinch-hit, run-scoring double in the eighth.
The Tornados committed two more errors in the ninth that led to two Pirates runs.
Justin Traxler (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits over the final four innings. The right-hander also fanned five and walked two.
Riley Wayland (1-0) picked up the win after hurling two scoreless panels.
Damian Del Signore paced Concordia's offensive attack with three singles.
Luke Kress was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The two squads will close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
